Twenty five years ago in May 1984, wearing incredibly tight shorts and the occasional ridiculous haircut, a football team from Watford stepped out onto the manicured turf of the old Wembley stadium in the FA Cup Final.  As they took to the field they seemed to symbolise changing times, maybe even of revolution.  Was the country going to the dogs or the Isle of Dogs?  Thatcher was about to take on Scargill and Watford, the unfashionable new kids on the block, were taking on the big boys.

But this isn't a book about politics or a football club, it isn't even just a book about football.  It's a light-hearted story of the choices we all face at some time seen through the eyes of a young man on the brink of adulthood and through the twin lenses of his passion for his club and his reactions to the tumultuous changes taking place both to him and to the country in the mid-1980s.  Armed only with idealism and an average degree, Colin Westlake emerges from the safe confines of university into an unfamiliar world of yuppies, Captain Sensible and mass unemployment,  It's a world that seems determined to make fun of him, forcing him to take sanctuary in the familiar rhythm of the football season.  What he doesn't know is that this particular season is the sort which only comes along once every generation - if you're lucky.

Golden Daze will strike a chord with anyone who's ever floundered in a confusing world or followed the sort of football team for whom glory is usually only a dream.  To read an interview with Nick in the Watford Observer about the book click here.  To see a feature in the Herts Advertiser click here.
