See the light

Remember when lightbulbs were the most straight-forward of things?  Not any more, the thought police have decreed that they need to become yet another annoyance of modern life ...

Oh for the days when a simple bayonet fitting did the job.  Back then choice was limited to 40, 60 or 100W.  Now it seems as if there's some kind of conspiracy, put together by the same people who make razor blades and printer ink, to have a bloody good laugh on us - all the way to the bank.  We have an entire cupboard devoted to replacement light bulbs - so how is it that when one pops (and blows the fuse breaker - don't get me started) I never have the one I need?  We don't change our light fittings that much, so how is it that when we decided to go through the cupboard we discovered that half of the bulbs that had been sitting there patiently were obsolete?  So, off we trudged to get ones that work and it seems that you have to buy an energy-efficient bulb, with a whole new set of variables to add to the big or small bayonet, push, screw, pull and ram-in fitting.

I'm in favour of energy efficiency - I have solar panels for God's sake!  But if you're going to issue a decree, ensure that there's the product available to fulfill it!  I've now been to three supermarkets and two DIY sheds and still my bedroom remains woefully under-illuminated.  Goodness knows the petrol this has involved, let alone the frustration I've had to experience staring at the bewildering variety of bulbs on display - none of which match what I need!!

I'm off for a lie down - in a darkened room of course.
